Corie

My heart is fighting to escape my body when he disappears from my sight, meaning he’s in the house. I listen for him and gasp out a sob when I hear his shoes on the stairs. He threatened to kill her, and I don’t doubt for a second that he would. This horror show is real, and now I have to figure out a way to get us out of here. Because there’s no way I’m letting this fuck take our lives. Figuratively or Literally.

I have to put on a good show. Be the disturbing version of myself that he wants me to be. Every time I tell myself to be strong, my thoughts keep flashing back to what he made me do in that storm shelter. Ever since, there’s been a weird feeling all over my body, as if my muscles and organs are covered in mud. At least he wasn’t down there with my mom long enough to have done anything like that to her.

The doorknob turns, and the moment he walks inside, I give him the most convincing smile I can muster. “We’re alone tonight. Do you know how to cook?”

I wish I did. I’m scared that when I tell him my skills in the kitchen don’t go beyond heating frozen foods and making noodles in a cup, he’ll ‘teach me’ another lesson. “I-I’m sorry, I don’t, but I can try.”

Even though he crosses his arms, he doesn’t give me that creepy smile or frown at me, so I don’t think I crossed a line. “You’ll need to learn for when your mom can’t be with us.” Nodding his head toward the hall, he walks out of my room. “Come on, I’ll throw together some spaghetti.”

My stomach is too twisted up to eat, but I wouldn’t dare say that. I hate this fear of every move I make. It’s choking me. He unknowingly relieves me when he doesn’t touch me.

I follow him to the kitchen where he tells me to fill a pot with water and boil it on the stove. As hard as I try, I can’t stop myself from looking at the door. I hate that she’s all alone out there. On the other hand, she’s probably safer out there away from him. I hope she doesn’t freeze. It definitely isn’t warm down there.

“She’ll be fine. Don’t let her ruin our dinner.”

I slowly turn to see him staring at me, his eyes surveying my body. Forcing down a swallow, I nod. “I won’t, Milo.”

He pours a jar of tomato sauce in a pan before walking over to me, pinning me against the counter. Everything inside me wants to hit him or kick him. There’s a knife caddy to my right, I just can’t let him catch me looking at it. His hands lightly hold both sides of my neck, his thumbs pushing my chin up to look at him. When he kisses me it’s soft, as if he actually believes this is a romantic moment. All I want to do is throw up in his mouth.
